More Quick Tips and Tricks to Speed up Your PC: Part 2

We recently covered quick tips to speed up your PC. Here are more tips to put into action to keep your PC running as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Automatically Delete Temporary Files to Speed Up Your PC

Temporary files quickly accumulate on your computer through everyday tasks and can remain on your hard disk, slowing the computer down. Delete these files and your internet history and cookies to give you a larger amount of hard disk space. More hard disk space will speed up your PC.

Open “My Computer” > local drive (usually C:\) > Select “Windows” folder > open the folder titled “Temp”.

Right-click on the folder > In the “View” options, select “Details”. Select all the files that are older than the current date and delete. After doing this, go to the Recycle Bin on your desktop and empty it.

Run a disk defragment

This may sound complicated, but this is simply a way of reconfiguring how your hard drive stores information for maximum efficiency.

Go to “My Computer”, right-click on the hard drive and select “Properties”. Under the “Tools” tab there should be an option to “Defragment Now”.

Update and use your antivirus software.

Viruses and malware can bog down your computer in a hurry, so it’s best to prevent them in the first place. If you’re using a free trial of antivirus software, uninstall it and try using Microsoft’s free Security Essentials antivirus software.

Stay diligent and schedule daily quick scans and weekly full scans to keep your PC running quickly and smoothly.

Reduce the number of programs that launch at startup.

This tip will affect how long it takes for your laptop or PC to startup, however, often many of the programs which are launched on startup continue to run and use up your computer’s memory when you don’t need them.

To prevent unneeded startups:

“Start” > “Run” > In “Run”, type “msconfig” and then press enter.  You will then see the “Startup” tab.  the programs marked are the ones that will load when your computer starts up.

You can either manually deselect the programs you do not want to load, or click “Disable All” and then select those you want to run, (i.e. such as particularly important programs like anti-virus software.

Caution: Don’t delete anything you don’t recognise without first searching Google to see if it’s a necessary program.

Keep this tips as part of your routine and you’re sure to notice the difference.
