Part 1: Tips for Keeping Your Mobile Devices Secure

We keep and do almost everything on our mobile devices and although they’re becoming more powerful and advanced than ever before, so are the risks of hackers. We’re constantly on the go and on our devices. Know how to keep your devices as safe and secure as possible.

1. Remember “S” equals “safer.” URLs that begin with ‘https:’ are safer. The “s” in “https” means that you’re connected to the site via the Secure Socket Layer (SSL), which means all data transmitted to that particular website is encrypted. Whenever you’re sharing personal or confidential information online, such as bank details or personal ID information, you want to be doing so securely. Again, be aware that this is still not a foolproof method.

2. Use VPN. If you have access to a VPN (virtual private network), always use it! A VPN provides secure access to an organization’s network and provides you with a secure layer that protects your information when you go online.

3. Leave your security settings alone! The default browser settings in Android and iPhone are fairly secure out of the box. You open yourself up to risk when you change them unless you really know what you’re doing.

4. Always keep software up-to-date.

It’s a quick and easy way to keep your devices safe and running at top speed. Get in the habit of checking the manufacturers website or Google search every few weeks, and especially before travelling for an update. If there’s a new version download it as long as it’s not covered in negative reviews.

5. Use strong passwords. We all know these basic rules of thumb but often ignore them. Using strong passwords are such a simple and easy way to protect your device. Always use a combination of letters, numbers and/or special characters (8 characters or more). Don’t make them obvious and instead try acronyms for things only YOU will know or understand. Finally,  change your passwords at least every six months
